Event Description:

All YPC members and non-members alike are invited to join us for a tour at the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center, home of the Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement. Located just outside of Drake University, the Harkin Institute serves as a venue for research, learning, and outreach to promote various policy issues. The building's namesake, Senator Tom Harkin, has made it his life's work to champion labor and employment rights for all Americans. This work culminated in his most important legislative achievement: The American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Winner of Iowa's 2021 Best Development Award, the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center opened in 2020, 30 years after the signing of the ADA, and uses the concept of Universal Design to expand on the inclusive design requirements set by the legislative document. The strategies for inclusive design developed for the project provides a model for architects and designers to create buildings and landscapes that are guided by empathy and inclusivity.

Throughout the tour, we will learn about the Harkin Institute's mission to promote inclusivity though policy and education and explore the various Universal Design Principles that make this project a leader in inclusive design.
